A Design Research of Measuring Instrument
for Barrier-Free Map

stotte is a product that can improve the existing method of collecting barrier-free information.

Barrier-free information can be collected more accurately and efficiently by stotte, and more accurate barrier-free maps for mobility handicapped can be created based on the collected information.

Almost one-third of Korea population is mobility handicapped.

That number increases by about 180,000 people every year.

As the number of mobility handicapped increases every year, the importance of ensuring rights to mobility and access for the mobility handicapped is emerging.

Main Barriers to Mobility Impairments

Curb height restriction

If the height of the curb is more than 2cm, it is difficult for the wheelchair to pass.

Running slope restriction

Wheelchairs cannot pass if the pavement's running slope exceeds 4.8 degrees.

Cross slope restriction

Wheelchairs cannot pass if the pavement's cross slope exceeds 2.4 degrees.

Path width restriction

Wheelchairs need at least 120cm wide to pass.

Inspiration

I was inspired by hoop rolling, a traditional play in many countries around the world. Like wheelchairs and other mobility assistance devices, hoop rolling is heavily affected by the barrier-factors on the road.

In a simple, if the Hoop can't go, wheelchairs also can't go.

Design Checklist

Based on information collecting case analysis and previous literature on barrier factors criteria, the product development checklist is derived in terms of usability and utility.

Shape Study

The design of the device is focused towards a shape that increases portability and mobility.
Based on the checklist, the final shape has a 22-inch wheel, grip and other factors.

User Testing Image

User testing

The usability test was conducted with the mock-up, evaluating users on four key items.

Test-1. Test the mobility of the product  /  Test-2. Test the shape of the handle (Grip)

Test-3. Test the position of the button  /  Test-4. Test the portability of form factor by user height

Tests have verified the portability and mobility of the device, and the position of the button has been changed due to difficulties in operating the button.

Final Design

The stotte makes it simple to collect barrier-free information.
Users can measure barrier factors simply by walking around the streets with the device.

Details

At the top of the device is a screen, a control button, a camera, and a headlight.


A. The screen gives feedback on measuring information in real-time.

B. Inside are various sensors for measurement, a motherboard, GPS, and batteries.

C. The camera and shutter button on the side makes it easy to take pictures of barrier factors.

D. The headlight allows users to explore even in dark environments.

E. The kickstand allows the device to stand, and the LED on the wheel indicates the measurement state in red, orange, and blue colours.

stotte can measure curb height, cross slope, running slope, and the width of pavement with various sensors.

The inclinometer and distance sensor are built into the 22-inch disc wheel, and users can intuitively identify the measurement status by the color of the LED on the wheel and the screen.

Mobile Application

The data measured by stotte is automatically uploaded to the stotte mobile app.
Mobility handicapped can get information about the barrier-free route with it.
