Product Material Research

Now that environmental issues are becoming a global issue, product waste made of plastic is considered one of the main causes of environmental pollution.

In this project, we studied how product designers can respond to the environmental issue. We aimed to make products using hemp fibres based on mass manufacturing process.

Hemp Fibre

The leaves of hemp are used for medical purposes, and the oil extracted from hemp seeds is used for cosmetic purposes.

Some of the hemp fibres left over during this process are woven and used to produce clothing, but most are thrown away. The use of discarded hemp fibers remains an important challenge for the hemp industry.

Mass Production

As a designer, we explored ways to apply materials to actual industrial production processes. The pulp press mold method was applied for mass production of the hemp products.

Press Mold Process Diagram

The products are produced through a simple process of making a shape by pressing a plate made of hemp into a mold.

Making Process

Dyeing

1. Dyeing

We tried to mix the two colours to avoid monotony. To make colorful dough, we mixed hemp with different colour.

Mixing

2. Mixing

We mixed different hemp fibers to create the perfect blend for durability and aesthetics.

Hemp Dough

3. Hemp Dough

Hemp Dough is the basic unit for shaping the products. To make the dough, put hemp pulp into water and scoop it out with a sieve.

Pressing

4. Pressing

Press the hamp dough into the mold to get the shape of the product. After 2-3 hours, open the mold and take out the shaped dough.

Pasting & Drying

5. Pasting & Drying

The shaped dough undergoes hardening and drying process to maintain the form. Natural powder glue was used for hardening.

Light

We designed a light using the translucent properties of hemp material.

We explored the housing possibilities of the Hemp.
Instead of bonding for the continuity of the product, it combines with thread.
